50 Years of Beetle Bailey
Published in Paperback by NBM Publishing, Inc. (April, 1900)
Average review score:

Through The YearsBeetle Bailey has been in service for fifty years and this collection compiles artist Mort Walker's best and significant strips of the lazy soldier. The book is broken up into the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's and it's real interesting to see how the characters' look have evolved over the years. Beetle himself was originally a college student and Mr. Walker explains that at the time very few people went to college in the country and could relate to Beetle, so in order to sell the strip on a wider level he ha Beetle join the army. Obviously, Mr. Walker made a smart decision as Beetle and his Camp Swampy are still going strong.
I'M STILL LAUGHING!This delightful collection of Beetle Bailey strips had me laughing so hard it HURT! Mort Walker is truly a genius! The indolent soldier, the irate sarge and cast of assorted, equally funny characters are truly a treat. This collection is truly a treat. You will learn from Private Beetle Bailey the fine art of work dodging, sarge baiting and finding laughs in the most unlikely places. A keeper!
A "must" for all Beetle Bailey fans! This keepsake edition doesn't appear in color, but the black and white cartoon strips from old and new Beetle Bailey drawings will delight any avid fan of Beetle. Walker hand-picked his favorites from 18,000 strips, providing a strong set of 'personal bests'.

After Chancellorsville: Letters from the Heart: The Civil War Letters of Private Walter G. Dunn & Emma Randolph
Published in Paperback by Maryland Historical Society (October, 1998)
Average review score:

An outstanding contribution to Civil War studies. After Chancellorsville: Letters From The Heart is a collection of the Civil War correspondences between Emma Randolph and Private Walter G. Gunn of the 11th New Jersey Infantry as Dunn. They began their exchange of letters when Walter went off to war and Emma was a young girl not yet twenty years of age. Water was carried from the bloody battlefield of Chancellorsville to a hospital in Baltimore. And it was their that he relayed to her the everyday events that comprise an intimate, eye-witness account representing a compelling and informative account of the hardships he endured while in the service of his country. Emma's letters were of the familiar things of home that Walter so badly needed to counter the horror that he lived through -- and almost died from. In time, the grew to love one another and planed a life together after the carnage and slaughter of war was ended. After Chancellorsville is an engaging and much appreciated contribution to the growing body of Civil War literature left in legacy for the benefit of future generations.

A rare view of the homefront during the Civil WarAmong all the hundreds of books about the Civil war, very few show the human dimension of men away on duty and the folks back home. Here Private Walter Dunn of New Jersey, wounded at Chancellorsville and with a minie ball still in his shoulder, is sent to a hospital in Baltimore. He works as a medical orderly as the wounded stream in from Gettysburg. And he renews his correspondence with Emily Randolph back home in Plainfield, New Jersey ( he lost her letters to a Rebel scavenger on the battlefield) Emily is an unforgettable young woman, playful, optimistic, dutiful, and serious, a fine observer of the people and the activities at home (among them the Lincoln reelection campaign). Walter, in turn, is in a vantage point for interpreting the events of the war, particularly as Baltimore lies vulnerable to Confederate attack. There is an interesting love story here, but more than that, the book is outstanding in reaching daily life and customs during the war. A fine addition to Civil War literature.

fascinating experiencei have actually read this book 3 times....what an enjoyable read and a time to reflect....want to feel better---buy a copy and you will immediately cheer up (with a few tears shed along the way). of course i'm a bit prejudice, believing that golden retrievers are our gift from heaven....
Bailey BymysideAnyone who owns a Golden Retriever will see a little bit of Bailey in him/her. Patricia Burlin Kennedy has been able to put into words what so many of us feel in our hearts. Anyone who reads this book will "feel" the connection that these four legged creatures have with us. You will smile, you will cry and hopefully, you will pause to think about these life lessons and promise to be a better person because of these reminders. Please buy this book for your children and encourage them to live by Bailey's example.
Bailey Bymyside:Golden Lessons for LifeBravo! Kennedy and Christie have done it again. "Bailey Bymyside" is not simply a book about the amazing life of a fine Golden. It is a spiritual journey that will teach the reader some of the most important lessons life has to offer. Each page carries a profound statement with a glorious accompanying illustration, that will make you pause and reflect sometimes sirring a tear or a "dog earred" grin. For example, the lesson "that compromise allows us to move forward together" with a picture of 2 dogs swimming upstream with a shared stick in their mouths. What an profound message in today's world! This book is really for the young and old. Pair this book with their first book, "Through Otis' Eyes: Lessons from a Guide Dog Puppy" and you will be giving the best holiday or birthday gift a dog lover has ever received!

Cook's Ingredients
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (November, 1980)
Average review score:

Great information for any level cook!I love to cook, and entertain my clients quite frequently with interesting and unique recipes. Therefore, I am always looking for fantastic new recipes, but don't always know exactly what a certain ingredient might be. This book explains a lot about ingredients you might not use often, but may be necessary for that great recipe. The descriptions are succinct and easily understood, and I now take the book with me while shopping for an "exotic" (meaning, I may never have used it before -- it may be commonplace to some other cook) ingredient. The pictures really help you know what you're looking for and how to know if it's fresh, etc. Required text for anyone who loves to cook with flair!
A Must for Every KitchenI have used this reference again and again from looking up curious spices to distinguishing chile peppers. A must for every cooks "display" as it intrigues even those who are not interested in cooking at all! We love the photographs and presentation!
great reference bookterrific photgraphs and summaries...easy to use..extremely informativ

The Cross and the Prodigal; The 15th Chapter of Luke, Seen Through the Eyes of Middle Eastern Peasants: The 15th Chapter of Luke, Seen Through the Eyes of Middle Eastern Peasants
Published in Paperback by Concordia Publishing House (June, 1973)
Average review score:

The Cross and the ProdigalI have used this book for years in helping people understand the middle eastern context of the parable. Dr. Bailey's experience and insights bring the text alive in ways our western interpretation sorely misses. I would recommend this for anyone who is serious about understanding this parable. Unfortunately, it will whet your appetite for more middle eastern understandings of the other parables of Jesus. Hopefully, Dr. Bailey will write even more; and hopefully, this will come back into print!
Insightful -- Artistic -- Eye-openerThis is one fantastic book -- an easy read -- great for a study -- adults or intergenerational. The graphics are simple yet stunning. The drama at the end makes for a great sermon at the close of the study. Members of the class can take the parts and learn them by heart or do it as a readers' theater. With bread at the center of the drama -- it is especially meaningful on a Communion Sunday or Maundy Thursday. The drama is a bit long -- but can be creatively edited without losing any of the impact to fit nicely within the context of worship.
Sell your shirt to get this! This is a great book - especially if you have been interpreting Jesus' parables with western mindsets! Bailey is an expert in the area of studying the cultural context of Jesus' hearers.
Yes, the book is out of print, but more recently I have secured a copy from ACORN PRESS which has been given the right to reprint the title in Australia. It sells for under US$10!
The address is Acorn Press Ltd. P O Box 282, Brunswick East, VIC. 3057 Australia.

It's a GREAT book! Give Acorn press a call!

Esoteric Astrology: A Treatise on the Seven Rays, Vol. 3
Published in Paperback by Lucis Publishing Company (June, 1998)
Average review score:

Go SlowlyWhen I first looked at this book, I found I didn't understand it at all. It took me a few years to begin to get into it...then it opened up to me and I couldn't put it down. I'm a professional astrologer now and I keep coming back to this Master work and get more out of it every time. This is one you'll have on your bookshelf for many years. My advice is to savor it slowly. Enjoy!
Esoteric AstrologyThis book was given to me by an astrologer. He understood the complexities contained therein. I'm in my 5th reading and I still have much to learn since astrology is not my forte. Yet, with each reading I absorb a bit more about the Logos, the Will of God, the hidden Light of God and the Life of Light... Slowly, I experienced self-consciousness as a necessary step in man's evolution. Recognition of the Christ life and nature, as it expresses itself in daily living to the aspirant was seen to happen in my life in the hope that awareness as lived by the initiate will eventually be mine. A book to be read, re-read and lived. A book to pick up often, daily, for many years to come.
Esoteric AstrologyThe master work on astrology, now updated and made more understandable by Dr. Douglas Baker's work of the same name, available from Baker Publications in England. Put Baker's Dictionary of Astrology with it and you can comprehend true astrology for the first time, and forever.

Clifford of Drummond Island
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (June, 2001)
Average review score:

Horses, dogs, natureThis book gives us a peak in to the life of a very interesting, talented woman. She actually has time to ride her horse with her dogs running along beside. She has great adventures, thanks to a horse, Clifford, with a spunky personality. I think any animal lover will enjoy this book very much. References to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan are pretty interesting, also.
A horse with a mind of his ownThis is a story about a horse that has a mind of his own, another horse who is perfect, and one who isn't so right in the head. Clifford of Drummond Island is a great book. Clifford is a chestnut colored Morgan colt who is raised using "clicker training" a technique used on dogs. With clicker training Clifford learns various tricks including learning how to fetch a cone. Clifford wins the hearts of everyone on Drummond Island, especially Mrs. Bailey's dad. This a great book for horse lovers and non-horse lovers alike!
Clifford of Drummond IslandNancy Bailey has written a wonderful book, for animal-lovers of all ages, about Clifford, her Morgan horse with TOO much personality. Her evocative and descriptive prose takes the reader on a journey to Drummond Island, Michigan, and encounters with family members, islanders, birds, dogs, "fudgies," and of course Clifford himself. By the end of the book, I felt that I had known all of the characters myself!

From Front Porch to Back Seat: Courtship in Twentieth-Century America
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (August, 1989)
Average review score:

Courtship is AmericaA change of courtship occurred from the 1920s and 1940s was the shift from the girl's household to the vechile and away from the watchful eyes of the community. It was a change from sitting at the parlors at the girl's family. A boy would have to be invited to a girl's house causing the woman to have the authority and control, but those things changed. A boy could not go to a girl's house without her permission, but at times changed the guy began to take the authority from the girl. Dating was what was causing the changes of courtship. It moved the girl and the boy outside the home and created a shift from the parlor at the girl's house. Examples would be the replacing of the girl's house with the car.
Bailey's book is great for reading and will take only a day to finish (143 pages). Also, it is a really nice looking book. It covers the roles of consumption and competition in courtship, and the understanding that courtship has changed in American society. I give the book four stars.
A Fascinating Story--But Please, an Updated Version!I'm a college professor and I use this book in my classes all the time. Students (male and female) love it, and they remember it. Many of them give the book to their parents to read. Bailey is an engaging writer who employs a wide variety of sources to demonstrate the path from calling to dating to going steady, and the changing meanings of those words. An historian, Bailey provides helpful social and cultural contexts. It's useful gender history. But what the book really needs is an update that would take this topic to the present. The Epilogue doesn't explain enough about dating nowadays, and thus the earlier chapters are best.
An Interesting Historical PerspectiveMs Bailey writes of 20th century courtship from the 1920's or so onwards. Discussing those elements that changed social conventions and permissible actions (such as the car) she vividly discusses the evolution of courtship, and with it sexuality throughtout the 20th century. A fun read for kicks, and a fabulous resource for historians researching the evolution in dating.
